Gastro-aesthetic-ism was created in response to a fundamental weakness in conventional restaurant criticism: complex gastronomic experiences are frequently reduced to generic star ratings, brief reactions or unstructured personal opinion. These formats provide little insight into why an experience succeeded, where it failed or how its sensory, aesthetic and conceptual elements worked together.

Design Individuals were responsible for developing the project as a complete evaluative framework, including its concept, naming, visual identity, evaluation methodology, printed card and digital presentation. The central strategic decision was not to eliminate subjectivity, but to give it structure. Rather than presenting individual taste as an objective verdict, the system encourages people to observe, articulate and assess their own experience through a consistent set of criteria.

The framework was implemented through an evaluation card that examines a meal across dimensions including taste, aroma, flavour, ingredients, texture, visual presentation, colour, portion, aftertaste, value, conceptual coherence and memorability. A defined scoring scale supports comparison without reducing the experience to a single unexplained number, while the restrained visual identity allows the content and act of evaluation to remain central. The system is public, free to use and designed to function across printed and digital formats.

The result is an open and repeatable method for transforming personal reactions into more considered gastronomic criticism. Gastro-aesthetic-ism gives diners a clearer language through which to express their experiences and offers restaurants more meaningful feedback than conventional ratings alone, establishing gastronomy as a legitimate field of sensory, cultural and aesthetic reflection.
